2011 Fly Fishing Course

The Southland Fly Fishing Club, held its annual (2 day) Fly Fishing course on 12/13th Feb, again booked out months in advance.

This years course was again very successful, weather was not on our side this year, and has not been stable for any length of time at any part of the season for 2010/2011.

The winner of the Scierra Fly Vest from Composite Developments was James Cleghorn (right)

The Southland Fly Fishing Club is proud to have the support of a New Zealand rod making company such as CD, if you would like to know more about their range of Fly Rods, then go to www.cdrods.co.nz or click on the CD logo.

Day 1:
From 9am - 4pm at the Fish & Game Offices; Saturday was all day in the classroom, due to poor weather and gusty winds late in the afternoon which prevented us doing stage1 - casting tuition on the park as usual.  So this was replaced with tidying up participants gear, mainly replacing leaders, tying on braided loops to replace bad joins and knots, in preparation for their cast the next day

Day 2:
9am - 4pm on the Mataura River at Edendale;  We arrived to an overcast morning, and light winds, with the river about half a meter above normal for that time of year and previous days, although still clear for fishing.  The only problems it caused were less beach in our casting area, and finding the location of fish later in the afternoon.

Some participants in the course did manage to hook up on a fish.  A very nice Perch was landed by one of the ladies attending, this caused quite a bit of excitement for a while, thinking we were were going to have some luck catching a few trout, but sadly no trout were caught on our bend of the river.

As the afternoon wore on, the weather changed, and deteriorated with more wind making conditions harder, but all the same people seemed to be happy out there enjoying the day, new experiences, and meeting other people with interest in learning how to fly fish.

It was great to see so many women on the course, and it does seem to be, that more woman have been taking up outdoor sports, like fly fishing over the last few years.
